Since this is the first official Webcomic Wednesday post, I’ll be starting off with Let’s Play!, Lore Olympus and Siren’s Lament! This last week had some wonderful chapters for readers and I think all of these stories are really going in an interesting direction. Let’s get started shall we?
Siren’s Lament
The story is currently killing me. The fact Shon has changed so drastically since he’s become a siren is both sad and painful. Who was once a loving man is now a really hollow person, and I think there’s a lot to say about the writing that went into this. Up until this point, we’ve only been introduced to sirens who’ve already been cursed. When we hear what people lose as a siren, we don’t see those direct effects because Ian is slowly becoming human and Lyra’s loss really only came in memory. The same goes for Tua and Pele whom we can’t compare to their human selves. Losing Shon really shows what’s at stake.
The last chapter is really building up to something, but I have to say I had a breath of relief seeing Tua get off that freakin’ ship. I have to wonder what crazy pants is going to do now that his friend is a siren; a part of me is actually really invested in their story, I’m excited for new panels with them. Now that Shon and Tua are together, I’m also hoping that Shon feels a little better about what he’s been told about his past life and curse. Tua may be able to set some things at ease, like the fact that Lyra and Ian are not a thing.
Speaking of that ship, I want to talk a little bit about that for a second. Up until this point, I had a hard time understanding the Ian x Lyra ship. To me, there just weren’t many opportunities for this to be a two-way street. It’s always been a Shon x Lyra thing for me, mainly because it’s so obvious; the history, chemistry and obvious moments before they got together really iced out any possibilities with Ian. So now that Shon is gone and we’re not entirely sure that we’ll ever get the real him back again, the development and possibilities for Ian is pretty boundless right now. I don’t particularly appreciate some of the stuff he does, knowing how Lyra feels, but we’ll have to see where it goes.

Let’s Play!
I love this webcomic, seriously guys. I feel so relatable to the main character and I have almost nothing outside of video games in common with her. Sam has such a lovable personality, but the visualizations for her emotions and self-consciousness really define some of the feelings I have to a T; also, it’s really clever in terms of shape and overall design.
The latest chapter gave us a cute day-in-the-life of Sam’s dog, Bowser, and I have to say that was one of the cutest chapters I’ve seen anywhere. I usually am not a big fan of dogs, hence my cat-themed blog, but for Bowser? Anything he wants. I especially liked seeing his theme-appropriate Princess Peach toy, because that was also super cute.
I’m excited to see where Sam goes now that she’s going to be Charles’ assistant. The one thing that’s been slowly happening is Sam is getting more and more out of her shell and learning new things about herself. I’ve always loved stories where the characters have a self-discovery journey and I appreciate that this comic takes it’s time with that. The last few chapters we’ve seen her take some risks and be more assertive, which is definitely important for her development as a character. I love seeing this side of Sam and I can’t wait to see where it take us in the coming weeks.

Lore Olympus
The art for this comic always has me at a loss for words. I always love how surreal it makes everything feel, especially considering we’re talking about Greek gods. Up until this point, I’ve had a massive soft side for Hades; I feel horrible for him because he gets pegged for what his brothers do when he’s really just trying to fit in, even when that’s poorly executed. Hades and Persephone seem like such an innocent couple in a crowd of much more webbed characters.
What I really enjoyed about this episode was that it held a lot of irony. Up until this point, everyone has been seriously railing on Hades and claiming him to be as bad as his brothers. Meanwhile, you have Apollo who definitely does not have good intentions with Persephone. I think this will be a huge lesson for Artemis in particular. She very rarely listen to her friends preferences and is constantly trying to protect her from a threat that’s not there, meanwhile, she brings a real threat right into her home. Her trust in her brother is clearly misplaced and my hope is that, from here on out, she’ll start listening to what Persephone says.
I’m really enjoying seeing different sides to Persephone. We’ve seen her gentle, kind and passive up until now; something that certainly fits the narrative people give her. I’m interested to see her grow into a more assertive goddess in general, with or without the help of Hades. My biggest hope is probably that Hades won’t be what fixes the problem, but will certainly be the straw on the camel’s back that influences her to pursue what she wants.
It can be really difficult to rewrite the problematic tale of Hades and Persephone, because when it comes to Greek mythology a lot of the gods were real asses. I’ve seen a lot of fantastic, healthy renditions done to the tale and I’m hoping that Lore Olympus will follow in suit.
